Oscar asks permission to attend grandfather’s memorial
There are several factors that need to be considered before an application is approved such as security for the inmate, the crime committed and length of sentence.
Convicted murderer and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has applied for temporary release from prison to attend his late grandfather’s memorial service, Rekord East records.
Gauteng department of correctional services spokesperson Mocheta Monama confirmed that the Paralympian, serving 13 years for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, had put forward an application to be freed temporarily to attend the memorial reportedly taking place this week.
Pistorius’ grandfather Hendrik Pistorius died in October from ill health and reports surfaced that Pistorius was not taking the news well.
Monama said the application had been received by the department but it was still pending approval by the head.
“There are several factors that need to be considered before an application is approved such as security issues surrounding the inmate, the kind of crime committed by the applicant and the number of years he has been sentenced to.”
He said Pistorius had only made two applications, one when his grandmother passed on and one now to attend his grandfather’s memorial service.
The time it took to consider an application could take long depending on the circumstances so was not set in stone, according to Monama.
