Pedestrians hit by truck in KZN after attempting to rob someone

An investigation will be launched after two pedestrians died this morning after they were hit by a truck on a busy route in KZN.

Two pedestrians, who had allegedly attempted to rob another pedestrian, were struck by a truck on the N3, near Liberty Midlands Mall in KZN on Sunday morning.

According to Midlands EMS, who attended the scene, it is believed the two pedestrians were fleeing across the highway, after attempting to rob someone, when they were hit by a truck.

“Both pedestrians sustained fatal injuries and were declared deceased at the scene,” said Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson.

He added authorities were present and will investigate further.

The latest road accident statistics, over the 2024 December holiday season delivered by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy last week, revealed that pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities, at 45.6%, followed by drivers ( 26.7% and cyclists (0.74%).

Creecy said a total of 439 fatal crashes have been recorded, which is a 3.1 % increase when compared to 426 fatal crashes recorded in the same period last year.

These figures were presented as an increase in road traffic on the N3 and other national roads is expected on Sunday as holidaymakers return home from different provinces as many are expected to return to work on Monday.
