Pensioner fights back against armed robbers in Springs

A bystander and suspect were shot after an altercation between robbers and the elderly victim.

A pensioner was attacked by two men while stuck on the roadside at the corner of Welgedacht Road and First Avenue in Bakerton, Springs, on Thursday.

The victim, in his 70s, suffered car troubles and was waiting for assistance when he was approached by the pair.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the men cornered the pensioner and searched him for valuables.

During the search, they saw he had a firearm in his possession.

“The pensionar reached for it and shot one of them,” adds Tshabalala.

Shots fired during the altercation struck a passing car and injured a bystander. Tshabalala explains the bystander and suspect were rushed to hospital.

The suspect is under police guard.

The other suspect is still at large with a cellphone stolen during the robbery.

Cases of robbery and attempted murder are under investigation.
