Pilot killed in helicopter crash at Polokwane Game Reserve

A pilot was killed when a helicopter crashed in Polokwane this morning, with authorities investigating the cause of the fatal incident.

A 2004 Bell 206L-4 Long Ranger helicopter with registration number ZS-RAC crashed in the Polokwane Game Reserve earlier this morning.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, was killed, according to an emergency service source at the scene.

Another source told the Polokwane Observer that the aircraft was en route from Zimbabwe on a routine flight when the crash occurred.

SAPS was at the scene to gather evidence for an investigation, and the South African Civil Aviation Authority has been notified.

Meanwhile, Pretoria Rekord reports that a plane crashed in Onderstepoort, Pretoria, yesterday afternoon.

“We received initial information that a plane crashed, but it seems like it was more of a controlled crash landing.”

The Tshwane Metro Police Department confirmed this morning that the recovery of the aircraft would take place today and was expected to be completed by 13:30.
