Police investigate death of 2 children in the Free State

Two young girls were certified dead in Mokwallo, Vredefort, and the provincial police commissioner has asked residents to remain calm.

The police are investigating the deaths of two girls, aged three and four.

According to Free State police spokesperson Loraine Earle, the police have opened an inquest for investigation after the two children were certified dead at the Multi-Purpose Centre in Mokwallo in Vredefort.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Baile Motswenyane, appeals to the community to afford investigators an opportunity to do thorough investigation in the matter.

The commissioner’s instruction to the investigator is to not leave any stone unturned while following on any leads, especially on the consumption trend of the two children in the past 24 hours.

“An appeal is made to our community not to jump to any conclusions or presumptions which can lead to the start of pointing fingers without any tangible evidence on hand,” says Earle.

“We want to assure the community of Mokwallo that as soon as the post-mortem process has been completed and the results thereof proves that any specific person must carry the responsibility for their deaths, that the individual will face the full might of the law,” explains Motswenyane.

Earle adds that the situation is calm at this stage. “Public Order Police members are monitoring the situation and will remain in the area until we are sure that the situation is back to normal. Nobody has been arrested as yet.”
