Police minister welcomes IPID probe into KZN top cop

IPID is investigating KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi over alleged interference in a senior official's arrest.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

According to The Witness, IPID said it is probing Mkhwanazi for allegedly interfering in the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official.

The alleged incident took place in Richards Bay in 2023.

Mkhwanazi must submit a sworn statement by Wednesday.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has welcomed IPID’s investigation into Mkhwanazi.

Addressing the controversy in a statement, Mchunu refuted reports that he lodged the complaint against Mkhwanazi.

IPID said a member of the public reported the provincial commissioner.
