Police probe KZN councillor’s murder as search for gunman continues

Senzakwenzeke Mabhida was shot at home and later died in hospital, while his sister survived. Police are investigating the motive.

Mandeni Ward 18 councillor Senzakwenzeke Phendukani Mabhida (41) was brutally murdered at his home on Tuesday night.

According to The North Coast Courier, reports indicate that Mabhida and his sister were at home when an unknown gunman entered and opened fire, leaving devastation in their wake.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick, Mabhida was found in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was stabilised at the scene and taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries. His sister was also shot but survived.

Mandeni Mayor Thabani Mdlalose shared his condolences.

“This is a very sad incident for our municipality. Mabhida was always one of the most vocal councillors who never stood by when things were going wrong,” said Mdlalose.

“He was always willing to raise concerns and put his people first.”

The motive for the killing is currently unknown, but police are investigating.

Mabhida’s murder comes just a day after four people, including two off-duty police constables, were killed in a nearby tavern in Sundimbili.

Another four people were injured when a group of at least five men opened fire during a fight on Monday night.
