Police recover dagga worth R5m in Burgersfort

The driver of a vehicle in which 711kg of dagga was found fled into the bushes to evade police.

Burgersfort police and members of the local farm watch intercepted a bakkie transporting 711kg of compressed dagga worth more than R5m yesterday.

The bakkie was intercepted at 20:30 on the R37 in Burgersfort, a town bordering Mpumalanga and Limpopo, during a rural safety SAPS operation.

“We were still getting ready for the roadblock when a Toyota Hilux bakkie travelling [towards] Burgersfort from Lydenburg was stopped at the Morone Farms.

“The driver got out of the car, fled the scene and disappeared into the bushes. We discovered 13 big bags of dagga and 46 small plastic-wrapped bags inside the bakkie canopy,” said one of the SAPS members who was part of the operation.

According to the SAPS, the 711kg of dagga could be worth more than R5m.

The management of SAPS thanked the local communities and farmers who always assist during roadblocks.

Police urged the community to work closely with the SAPS to fight crime in and around Burgersfort.

Police investigations continue.
