Police search KZN property for more bodies after gruesome discovery

Forensic teams prepare to deploy ground-penetrating radar at a Ladysmith property following the discovery of a deceased man and reports that further bodies may be buried there.

Could there have been a spate of murders in Ladysmith? This question has come to light after a body was found in Burma Road, Acaciavale, on Wednesday (October 28), reports Northern Natal News.

The deceased went missing on October 21 in Kandahar Avenue.

After a police appeal for help in locating the then missing person on Tuesday this week (October 27), the body was discovered the next day. This led to an intensive investigation by police.

Disturbingly, it has now come to light that more bodies may be buried at the residence in question, leading to community speculation and alarm that such killings could be happening in Ladysmith.

One resident living nearby commented that, “It’s like we’re living in a movie!”

Initial hunt for missing person

On Tuesday, Ladysmith SAPS issued an appeal to the community to assist in locating a person who went missing on Wednesday, October 21, in Kandahar Avenue.

The police statement read as follows, “Ladysmith detectives are appealing to the community to assist them in locating a missing person, Thulani Bongani Kunene (37). Thulani went missing on Wednesday afternoon 2026-10-21 while in Kandahar Avenue. He has not been seen or heard from since. Thulani is light in complexion and is of average height and build. He was wearing a red T-shirt, grey Chino trousers and black-and-white Vans takkies at the time of his disappearance. Lieutenant Colonel Duma can be contacted on 076 659 5133 or 082 411 7070. Alternatively, contact the 10111 toll-free number or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”

The body was found the next day.

Police return to scene

Yesterday (October 29), reports emerged that additional bodies may be buried at the residence where the first body was found, prompting police to return to the scene.

Today, forensics from out of town are expected to arrive in Ladysmith and use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to see if there are more buried bodies.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, but say they cannot comment at this stage.

Currently, three suspects have been arrested and are in police custody.
