Polokwane joins national action against proposed retrenchments within Massmart

Members of the SA Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) Northern Region and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) gathered this morning to voice their concerns against the proposed restructuring within the Massmart Holdings.

According to Saccawu Northern Region, the restructuring process will lead to mass retrenchments and a reduction in work hours. The group gathered at the park opposite the SABC park and marched down Market Street to Game Centre Polokwane.

This march forms part of national action against the company.

Massmart is partly owned by the American retail company Walmart and owns Game, Makro and Builders Warehouse. In January 2020 the company announced that they will restructure operations as a response to its lack of market growth.

At the time, the company proposed more than 14 00 jobs losses and the closure of several stores.

In February this year it was reported that the company issued a retrenchment notice announcing more than 130 jobs cuts.
