Popular West Rand pub burns down

The cause of the fire that gutted the Droogeheuwel pub in Randfontein, on the West Rand, remains unknown.

Firefighters reportedly battled tirelessly the to extinguish the fire on Wednesday night and finished just before 12am the next day, Randfontein Herald reported.

The pub manager, Ian Bossern, said it was a sad setback, as he estimated the damage caused by the fire to be at about R4 million.

“We have no idea at this stage as to what caused the fire, and we do not suspect any foul play. We will wait for authorities to assess the cause of the fire and the extent of damaged which it caused,” he added.

Bossern said the business would operate as soon as investigations were concluded.

Police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst said: “We are looking at this as a non-police matter. Complainants could not prove any element of crime regarding the incident.”

Last month, popular wedding and function venue Riverside Castle, in the east of Pretoria, caught fire.

According to Tshwane Emergency Services (TES) spokesperson, Johan Pieterse, firefighters managed to extinguish the fire that seemed to have occurred at one of the venue’s main halls.

Pieterse added personnel from three fire stations as well as a water tank from Tshwane were on the scene.

“When TES arrived, the roof of the building had already collapsed. Though there was a function going on at the time, the fire broke out, the guests were evacuated, and no one was injured during the fire,” Pieterse.
