Preliminary investigation into Waterkloof air force base fire completed

A report on the incident that led to a 24 000 litre fuel tank catching fire at the base will be given to the chief of the SANDF.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has completed its preliminary investigation into the fire incident that broke out at the Waterkloof air force base on January 23, 2022.

On Wednesday, spokesperson Brigadier-General Andries Mokoena Mahapa said a report on the incident that led to a 24 000 litre fuel tank catching fire at the base would be given to the chief of the SANDF.

“When he has fully studied the report, it will then be communicated to all members of the media as promised earlier.” He said a board of inquiry has also been convened.

Mahapa said the fire broke out at 19:00. It was contained within an hour by the South African Air Force fire-fighting team, from both the Waterkloof base and the Swartkops air force base in Valhalla.

According to Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Roland Hendricks, the contents of the tank were unknown.

“According to the air force, the fire was of such a nature that they did not deem it necessary to contact the metro for help. However, we responded from the nearest station to assist the base in the event the situation escalated,” Hendricks said.

He furthermore added that upon arrival, it was confirmed that metro resources were not required as the fire was already extinguished.
