Pretoria learners rushed to hospital after teargas incident

A local ward councillor says he received a message from a teacher who was struggling to breathe.

Several learners from Hoërskool Hercules reportedly had to be rushed to hospital on Thursday morning following an incident involving teargas.

The details surrounding the incident are vague at this stage.

According to local ward councillor Leon Kruyshaar, he received a message from a distressed teacher saying she and some of the learners were struggling to breathe.

“When I arrived at the school, I saw an ambulance outside,” Kruyshaar says.

“Several learners were being loaded onto stretchers and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

“Students affected by the gas were in a lot of pain; many of them were crying and they didn’t know what was happening.

“The gas can be particularly dangerous for anyone suffering from asthma or similar conditions and they could end up in a very serious condition.”

It is unclear at this stage exactly how the learners were exposed to the harmful gas.

When approached for comment, the school refused to provide any comment around the incident.

The Department of Education has yet to comment by the time of publication.
