Pretoria man drives 30km after being shot in attempted hijacking
Paramedics say they were called to help a man after he was shot at multiple times near a toll plaza outside Pretoria.
A man was shot at several times in an attempted hijacking at about 01:45 this morning near the Diamond Hill toll plaza outside Pretoria.
According to paramedics, the man drove about 30km to a filling station in Hatfield, Pretoria, to find help after he had been shot in the leg. His vehicle was reportedly riddled with bullets.
Emer-G-Med Operations Manager, Kyle van Reenen, confirmed that the man was treated on the scene by first responders, and stabilised.
“The man was found seated in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated and stabilised at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care,” said Van Reenen.
It was reported that the man sped away in his vehicle after being confronted by an unknown number of suspects attempting to hijack him. The would-be robbers opened fire during their foiled attempt and the man drove about 30km to evade the robbers and find assistance.
When he arrived at the fuel station, paramedics and police were immediately called to assist. Van Reenen confirmed that despite the injuries the man suffered, he was expected to recover.
The police are investigating the matter and appeal to the public to give any information they might have about the incident. They also advise people to be wary of their surroundings, especially in the late hours.
