Pretoria police arrest suspects believed to be behind many crimes in Gauteng

The suspects were apprehended after they caused an accident.

A high speed chase involving a light motor vehicle, security companies and police led to the arrest of three men in the east of Pretoria on Wednesday.

Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot said a white Hyundai i10, which was sought by police on the day, was spotted in Atterbury Road by security members.

“As the driver of the Hyundai became aware he had been spotted, he immediately sped off,” said Lightfoot.

A high speed chase followed and additional security companies and police gave chase.

“The chase reached Solomon Mahlangu drive, where the driver of the Hyundai lost control of the vehicle and caused an accident.”

He said three men jumped out of the car and started running.

Police from Lyttelton, Centurion, gave chase on foot and managed to catch up with and arrest all three of them.

The men are believed to be between 20 and 30 years old and are all from Tembisa.

They are being detained at the Garsfontein police station and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.

Lightfoot said an unlicensed firearm was confiscated and it was established that the Hyundai was recently hijacked in Pretoria Central.

“The detectives will leave no stone unturned as they investigate all information,” he said.

“We firmly believe that the suspects could be linked to many cases around Gauteng and possibly even to some of the armed robberies experienced in the east of Pretoria lately.”
