Pupil, 17, arrested for unlicensed gun

A 16-year-old high school pupil has been arrested after he was found with an unlicensed firearm while at school in the Usuthu area of Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the teen’s arrest came after police received a complaint about fighting at Falaza High School on Monday morning.

“The police proceeded to the said school. On arrival, the principal handed over black Olympic .38 with no serial and four ammunitions that was seized from the suspect,” Zwane said.

The pupil was later released into the care of his parents. Zwane added the firearm would be sent for ballistics testing to determine if it had been used in any other crimes in the country.

In October last year, Sanele Mahlangu, 17, died after being shot by a fellow pupil at a high school in Witbank, Mpumalanga. Mahlangu succumbed to his injuries a week after he had been shot. The pupil who shot Mahlangu was allegedly trying to show him he was in possession of a firearm when the gun went off. The 17-year-old pupil who shot Mahlangu was later arrested and appeared in the Witbank Magistrates’ Court.
