R3 000 bail set for alleged July unrest instigators
On Thursday, the Hawks arrested 20 suspects in relation to last year’s looting and unrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
A total of 22 people appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday on various charges relating to last year’s unrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
Bail was set at R3 000 each for the suspects with a number of conditions set at their hearing.
According to NPA KZN regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the suspects face charges of conspiracy to commit public violence, incitement to commit public violence and incitement to commit arson, relating to the acts of looting and public violence that took place in parts of KwaZulu-Natal during July 2021.
“Bail was set at R3 000, and the suspects were set a number of conditions, including not to post any information regarding the case on social media. They were also asked to inform the investigating officer should they wish to leave KZN or should they change their residential address and or their contact number,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
On Thursday, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) confirmed they had executed simultaneous arrests in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West, Free State, Western Cape and Northern Cape Provinces relating to the incitement of public violence through social media and other platforms.
The matter has been remanded to August 26 for further investigations.
