R79m fraud scandal: 2 KZN government officials suspended
A forensic investigation has been launched into contract work relating to the eradication of asbestos at four KZN hospitals.
Two KZN Public Works and Infrastructure Department senior officials have been suspended in connection with a multimillion-rand fraud scandal.
Department spokesperson Steve Bhengu says following information received from a whistleblower, two officials in the department’s Northern Region office have been placed on precautionary suspension as a forensic investigation into a multimillion-rand contract is launched.
The suspensions relate to contract work at four KZN hospitals, valued at R79m, for the eradication of asbestos. The probe will examine the rate of completion, value for money and work done in relation to invoices issued.
“The report, initially brought to the department’s attention on October 17, was immediately referred for investigation by MEC Martin Meyer. After nine days of detailed assessment, the head of department, on October 25, placed the officials on precautionary suspension pending the full forensic investigation.”
Bhengu says this ‘decisive’ action underscores Meyer’s commitment to transparency, accountability and integrity within the department.
He says Meyer extended his appreciation to whistleblowers who come forward with critical information and reaffirmed his commitment to protect and support those who aid the department in fighting corruption and wrongdoing.
“This comes at a time when the KZN Public Works and Infrastructure Department is currently implementing strengthened and new measures to make it easier and safer for whistleblowers to come forward.
“These measures will soon be officially launched, with the involvement of local communities,” says Bhengu.
