Rape accused Pietermaritzburg pastor seeks relaxation of bail conditions

A pastor and former school principal, accused of rape, is seeking to relax his bail conditions to attend church.

A 62-year-old Pietermaritzburg pastor and former school principal, charged with rape, sexual assault and sexual grooming of a minor, has made a new application requesting the relaxation of some of his bail conditions.

He was granted R5 000 bail in August on condition that he relocate and stay away from the school and church until the case is finalised.

The pastor yesterday appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court, requesting the court to relax the condition regarding being near the school.

According to his lawyer, the pastor wanted to be allowed to attend church on Tuesdays and Sundays. “The victim does not attend the same church and doesn’t live in the vicinity of the church.”

The state prosecutor said he was not opposed to the relaxation of bail conditions, however, the magistrate said he needed more time to look at the application and the matter was adjourned to December 4.
