Raygun the baboon on the move in Pretoria
Raygun the baboon is on the move in Pretoria, and authorities are tracking his journey to ensure a safe relocation.
Raygun, the notorious baboon known for wandering around parts of Pretoria, has reportedly been sighted in Silverlakes in the East of Pretoria.
According to reports on social media, a resident in Meyerspark heard footsteps on their roof, leading to the discovery of the baboon in their garden.
This adds to a series of sightings in Pretoria, where the animal has become a local sensation.
Authorities are still working to safely capture Raygun to prevent any harm to both residents and the baboon.
According to the Owl Rescue Centre, they are closely tracking him, and authorities are asking the public to help by reporting any sightings.
Brendan Murray of the Owl Rescue Centre said Raygun was in Frangipani Street heading towards Silverlakes.
“This is fine for now. We’re not going to try to catch or dart him yet. If he’s smart and sticks with the green belts, he will be well on his way to another baboon troop near Bronkhorstspruit by the weekend. But knowing these big guys love a bit of fun, we suspect he might try his luck and head through Mamelodi.”
Murray explained that Raygun poses no danger to anyone; he’s simply trying to get to his new home peacefully.
He also clarified that should the opportunity arise, they are prepared to dart Raygun, but there are some factors to consider when darting a baboon.
“There are a lot of risks involved. He can cover 2 to 3km before the drugs kick in, and during that time, he may cross over buildings, which can make it difficult to track him.”
Murray continued, “When baboons start feeling drowsy, they tend to climb. So if there is a ten-story building, he will go up and you don’t want to be on the roof of a ten-story building when you are all drugged up. So if it is safe to do, we will dart him. But if it’s safe, we will dart him.”
The team is carefully tracking his movements to ensure his safety. If he heads toward Mamelodi, efforts will be made to block his path.
