Ready, set, write: All systems go for final matric exams

Over one million candidates have registered to write their end-of-year examinations – and Umalusi has confirmed that public and private exam bodies are ready.

Umalusi, the council for quality assurance in general and further education, has confirmed that South Africa’s public and private assessment bodies are ready to conduct, administer and manage the 2025 end-of-year national examinations.

The Witness reports that following an extensive audit conducted between August 11 and October 9, Umalusi reported that more than one million candidates are registered to write the exams across the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Department of Higher Education and Training, Independent Examinations Board and South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute.

Briefing in Pretoria

Umalusi CEO Dr Mafu Rakometsi was speaking at a briefing in Pretoria today.

“The Department of Basic Education alone will oversee over 900 000 full-time and part-time National Senior Certificate candidates at more than 6 900 exam centres.

“Security measures, moderation of question papers and training of invigilators are all in place to ensure the credibility of the examinations,” said Rakometsi.

Rakometsi added that while minor challenges such as marker shortages in specific DBE subjects were identified, he expressed confidence that contingency plans, including additional recruitment and extended marking periods, will address these issues.

He confirmed that all mark-capturing systems are compliant and that mechanisms to handle examination irregularities are fully functional.

“Oversight monitoring will continue during the writing and marking processes to ensure fairness and consistency,” said Rakometsi.

Results and certificates

“Umalusi will release pupils’ results on 9 January 2026, followed by the issuance of certificates within three months.”

He commended all education stakeholders for their efforts in maintaining the credibility and integrity of South Africa’s examinations.

“We wish the Class of 2025 strength and determination as they prepare for the final stretch of their schooling journey. By and large, the system is ready,” added Rakometsi.
