Reiger Park community divided as mass shooting suspect walks free
A man arrested in connection with a mass shooting that left six dead will reportedly be released after the case was dropped for lack of evidence.
A 23-year-old man arrested in connection with the mass shooting in Reiger Park, which claimed six lives and left three others injured on Saturday, will reportedly be released in due course.
According to Boksburg Advertiser, the shootings that devastated the community occurred at around 18:50 across several streets in the area, including William Street, Stanbury Road, Regent Street and Martin du Preez Street.
Case not enrolled due to lack of evidence
The suspect, arrested by the Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit on Monday evening, was expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday. However, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the case was not placed on the court roll due to insufficient evidence.
“Investigations into this matter are ongoing, and an 18-year-old was brought in for questioning on November 5,” said Nevhuhulwi.
Police have again urged members of the public to share any information that could assist the investigation by submitting anonymous tip-offs via the MySAPS app or contacting the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10111.
Community attendance drops after outrage
Despite initial outrage following the incident, community attendance at court was low – a stark contrast to the large crowds that gathered outside the Reiger Park Police Station on Sunday, when national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi addressed residents.
Residents voice frustration
Outside the court, resident Peter William van der Walt expressed disappointment at the case’s delay.
“Community members didn’t come to court today. The people didn’t show up because they knew the justice system was going to fail them. I have three boys, and they can become victims of violence any day,” he said.
Another resident, Esther Mohammed, voiced frustration with what she called the community’s silence.
“I’m here as a concerned resident of Reiger Park, and I’m disappointed in the community. Unfortunately, in a court of law, evidence speaks. Law enforcement can only do so much. The most important role players are those who were at the scene – they can answer the how, when and what. Without that, there is no case. I understand the safety concerns, but there’s only so much the police can do.”
