Richards Bay mill shooting leaves 2 employees dead, 1 injured
Police have launched an investigation after emergency services responded to a violent incident at a KZN industrial site yesterday morning.
Mondi has confirmed a shooting incident that occurred at its Richards Bay mill yesterday morning.
According to Zululand Observer, it has been confirmed that two employees have died, while another was injured during the incident.
It is reported that a gunman shot two colleagues, killing one, before turning the gun on himself. The injured person was rushed to hospital.
Emergency response and site secured
The company in a statement says emergency protocols were immediately activated, and the site was secured. Police were on scene, and an investigation is underway.
Mondi has extended condolences to the affected families, loved ones and colleagues.
“The safety and well-being of our employees remains our top priority. We are providing support to our employees and have taken the necessary steps to ensure the site remains safe.
“We will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities and will provide further information as appropriate,” says Mondi South Africa CEO Jason Smith.
