Sandton police chase ends in arrest after attempted armed robbery

A high-speed chase ended in a crash and arrest, with police recovering illegal firearms from a vehicle and searching for two more suspects.

One suspect has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery and subsequent police chase in the Sandown area of Sandton yesterday afternoon.

Sandton Chronicle reports that, according to SAPS in Bramley, highway patrol officers received information about a white Toyota Corolla allegedly involved in an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton at approximately 14:00.

Police give chase

Police mobilised members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and private security to trace the suspects. While driving along Katherine Street, officers spotted the vehicle carrying three occupants.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, leading to a chase.

During the pursuit, two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot. Officers continued to follow the vehicle until it collided with a truck and came to a halt.

Arrest and recovery

The driver then attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police a short distance away.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered two unlicensed pistols, ammunition and gloves. Police also established that the vehicle had been cloned and was originally hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026.

The suspect is expected to face charges including possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving. Police confirm that efforts are underway to locate the two suspects who escaped.

Ongoing search

Brigadier Brenda Muridili says the swift response by law enforcement agencies played a key role in the arrest.

“Our members acted quickly on the information received and worked together with other law enforcement partners to trace the suspects. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors, and the search for the remaining suspects is continuing.”
