Sanitary pads are safe – health minister

Health experts say the levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in sanitary pads are low, and no link to health effects in women or girls has been found.

Health experts and researchers from leading South African institutions have reassured the public that sanitary pads remain safe to use, despite concerns raised by a recent study, reports Bloemfontein Courant.

During a media briefing yesterday, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi addressed concerns following research conducted by the University of the Free State.

The study found endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in every sanitary product that was tested.

Motsoaledi explained that the presence of EDCs in sanitary pads is not unexpected, as these chemicals are commonly found in various consumer products and have previously been documented in sanitary items.

He emphasised that the levels detected in the study were low.

Motsoaledi also noted that regulatory authorities in South Africa will continue monitoring and regulating such products to ensure consumer safety.

According to the minister, no study has yet established a direct causal link between the chemicals detected in sanitary pads and adverse health effects in women or girls.

He reassured the public that women and girls can continue using sanitary pads safely.
