SAPS foil attempt to kidnap Benoni businessman

A suspect who was shot and killed during an attempted kidnapping had reportedly recently been released from prison.

A suspect was shot dead and nine others were arrested in Ivory Park in Ekurhuleni after the police foiled the attempted kidnapping of a Benoni businessman yesterday.

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, a team comprising members of the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Highway Patrol, the Local Criminal Record Centre, SAPS Ivory Park, Gauteng Traffic, the JMPD and private security companies, acted on information about an attempt to kidnap a Benoni businessman.

“The syndicate was intercepted, during which one suspect attempted to evade arrest. He opened fire on the members, who retaliated and fatally wounded the suspect. Nine more suspects were arrested,” says Van Wyk.

One of the three firearms seized.

It was reported that the deceased was recently released from prison.

“Police seized three firearms and a vehicle, all of which were positively linked to other criminal cases,” says Van Wyk.

Nine men were arrested and another was fatally shot in Ivory Park yesterday.

The suspects will soon appear in court.
