SAPS warns against fake ‘Blue Lights Gang’ message in Fourways
Douglasdale SAPS has rejected claims of a so-called ‘Blue Lights Gang’ targeting motorists, warning residents not to spread unverified information.
Douglasdale police have dismissed reports circulating on social media about an alleged ‘Blue Lights Gang’ operating in the Fourways area, calling the claims false, malicious and reckless.
According to Fourways Review, the reports, allegedly issued by a private security company, warned residents of suspects driving a white unmarked Polo and a white Toyota Quantum, supposedly wearing police uniforms and hijacking vehicles along Winnie Mandela Drive, Witkoppen Road and Cedar Road.
Claims not supported by evidence
The security company claimed to have learned about the syndicate during a recent meeting with the station’s police forum. However, Douglasdale SAPS, in a media statement by Colonel Mavela Masondo, said the allegations were untrue and not supported by any verified incidents in the area.
“The statement is untrue, malicious and reckless as it makes the community panic,” said Masondo.
Police urged residents to rely on verified information from official SAPS communication channels and to avoid spreading unverified messages that could harm public confidence or hinder investigations.
SAPS stresses partnership with private security
Masondo reiterated that SAPS maintains strong working relationships with private security companies through the Eyes and Ears initiative — a partnership between the SAPS, Business Against Crime South Africa and the private security sector.
“This initiative ensures that private security companies have access to crime patterns and hotspots within their operational areas. It also enables the sharing of community-based intelligence as we work together to keep the inhabitants of Gauteng safe.”
Police encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity directly to the nearest police station or call the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111.
