Sars customs officers make 160kg rhino horn bust

The shipment was declared as “Live Plants” and consisted of eight pieces - Sars.

Thirty-two pieces of rhino horn, weighing in at 160 kilograms, was seized by South African Revenue Service (Sars) customs officers at a cargo transit shed at the OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday (July 17).

The officers were conducting manifest profiling with the Detector Dog Unit at the airport when one of the dogs identified a suspicious shipment destined for Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

During an inspection, six boxes were found containing traditional material that was concealing 32 pieces of rhino horn protected with bubble wrap.

The South African Police Services’ Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) was alerted about the detection.

A criminal case was registered with the Saps for further investigation.
