Sassa gold cards still usable until deadline announced by reserve bank
While discussions with the reserve bank are underway, the issuing of black cards by Postbank has been suspended indefinitely.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has given Postbank instruction to ensure that Sassa gold cards remain active, and that all transactions on these cards must be honoured.
The instruction was given to ensure that gold card beneficiaries who have not yet migrated to the new black card, will continue to receive their grants.
Meanwhile the Portfolio Committee on Social Development has urged gold card beneficiaries to apply to a bank of their choice to receive their social grants.
Chairperson of the committee Bridget Masango said, “The suspension of the issuing of the Postbank black cards poses a disadvantage to the many beneficiaries who are yet to receive their cards. While we understand the complexities that surround this process, it is important to ensure that assurance is given to beneficiaries that there will be no disruptions in their use of the gold card and that they will receive their monies.”
A new deadline for the termination of the Sassa gold card is expected to be issued by the SARB soon.
While discussions are underway between SARB and Postbank, the issuing of the black cards by Postbank at their sites across the country has been suspended indefinitely.
Sassa says it remain hopeful that all beneficiaries will continue to receive their money while also emphasising the right of the beneficiaries to choose any bank of their choice.
If such a need arises, they can approach the nearest Sassa local office.
Beneficiaries can still use their gold cards at major retail chains and ATMs nationwide. For more information, contact 0800 60 10 11.
