School transport driver murdered in Cato Manor, whilst pupils onboard

It is alleged that three gunmen approached a car full of children and shot towards the school transport driver.

An ordinary school run ended in the gruesome death of a school transport driver and left an 11-year-old girl dealing with both physical and emotional wounds after she was shot in the thigh in an alleged incident of taxi violence in Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

According to provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbele, the victim, 39-year-old Khulekani Mbatha, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by authorities.

“It is alleged that today [Tuesday] at 6:30am, at Ridgeview in Mkhumbane, a school transport driver was collecting children to school when a vehicle with three unknown occupants opened fire towards him. The driver believed to be in his thirties sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body and was declared dead at the scene,” confirmed Col Mbele.

The 11-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was rushed to hospital for medical attention. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation at Cato Manor SAPS.
