School violence in KZN: 3 learners hospitalised after separate incidents
Three learners were injured in two violent incidents in Pietermaritzburg and Durban, raising fresh concerns about escalating school violence.
Three learners were injured during two separate violent incidents yesterday afternoon.
The Witness reports that in Pietermaritzburg, two learners, aged 15 and 17, sustained lacerations to their heads and legs, allegedly following an altercation with another learner at Esther Payne Smith School.
According to Mi7 Group Director Colin David, teams received reports of a brawl between learners in Northdale.
“Several Mi7 teams were dispatched to the Bombay Road area where the incident was said to have taken place. They were joined by their counterparts from other security service providers.
“Another security company had apprehended one learner, believed to have attacked both victims. The pair were treated on site before Mi7 reaction officers transported them to a nearby hospital for further treatment,” said David.
Police took over management of the scene, David added.
According to recent reports by The Witness on multiple cases of school violence in the vicinity, it is alleged the fights are often linked to turf wars, bullying and substance abuse.
In a separate incident in Trenance Park, Durban, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed during an altercation, leaving a knife lodged in the back of his neck.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram, they received a call for emergency medical services at Trenance Park Secondary.
“On arrival, the male was located lying in a prone position in the office area. A large kitchen knife was protruding from the back of his neck. He was bleeding profusely from his injury.
“The Grade 10 learner informed reaction officers that he was returning to his residence in Amaoti, KZN, when he was accosted by three other learners from the same school. An altercation ensued before one of the males produced the knife and attacked the victim. The trio fled following the incident,” said Balram.
The injured learner was assisted by a passer-by, who returned with him to the school to seek help, where a Rusa officer stabilised him.
