Electric Ferrari fetches record-breaking R649m for charity
The tailor-made Luce EV made auction history at the 2026 Monterey Car Week Auction, with Ferrari Foundation charities set to reap the rewards of its staggering sale price.

The first Ferrari Luce – ‘Chassis 0’ – has been sold for a staggering $40m at RM Sotheby’s 2026 Monterey Car Week auction, becoming the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.
Ferrari’s first official production example of the opinion-splitting Luce EV has gone under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s 2026 Monterey Car Week Auction for the sum of $40m, or R648 903 200 at the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate.
The ‘Tailor Made’ specification model, which was previously valued in excess of $1 100 000, or around R18 123 875 has greatly exceeded expectations, and all proceeds in its sale will go towards various Ferrari Foundation charities.
Finished in Madreperla Semi-Gloss exterior paint, this Luce also wears the desirable ‘Chassis 0’ moniker, which is demarcated in a dedicated plaque. Bespoke brake callipers, wheels, and the Prancing Horse logo are also set against the optical white shade developed specifically for this vehicle.
According to Ferrari, the finish aims to produce evolving green and violet iridescent reflections depending on the angle of the light.
Stepping inside, Ferrari’s Tailor Made programme further adds exclusive touches such as the Le Mans metallic leather finished in Perla and contrasted with Grigio Corvara accents.
All secondary interior elements are finished in Grigio Corvara instead of the traditional black, further enhancing the ‘luminous character of the project’.
As a reminder, the Luce’s electric quad-motor setup houses two units for each axle, front and rear, with a combined output of 725kW in its highest output ‘Performance mode’. Ferrari claims this will propel the Luce from 0-100km/h in just 2.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 310km/h.
