Schoolchildren critically injured in KZN taxi crash
Numerous pupils were transported to hospital with serious injuries after an accident.
Moments before a taxi carrying schoolchildren crashed into a tree yesterday morning, the terrified children had pleaded with the driver to stop speeding.
Ten children had to seek medical attention after the accident in Mysore Road at around 06.45. At least eight of the children were critically injured.
Bystanders alleged that the taxi, meant to carry only 16 passengers, was overloaded with more than 20 children.
In video footage supplied by a local church in Mysore Road, in the vicinity of where the accident occurred, the taxi can be seen speeding on the pavement before dodging the traffic signal and swerving head-on into the tree.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services Pietermaritzburg responded to the scene and treated the children before transporting some of them to hospital after stabilising them.
Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics says some of the children who are in critical condition in hospital sustained head injuries during the crash.
