Search for missing Sodwana Bay skipper

While there is much speculation as to what could have happened to a fisherman lost at sea, nothing has yet been confirmed.

A full-scale search has been launched after a well-known Sodwana Bay-based fisherman went missing at sea yesterday.

The 21ft Yeld Cat Magnum Too went missing with John Matambu and one fisherman aboard.

Both Richards Bay Station 19 and St Lucia Station 40 National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) bases are involved in the search and hope to get helicopter assistance this morning.

According to unconfirmed reports, the vessel was last seen heading north at Bhanga Nek.

While there is much speculation as to what could have happened, nothing has been confirmed and authorities are focusing all resources on the search.

The search area.

The NSRI is appealing for assistance with any information, should anyone know anything.

A missing person’s case has been opened at Mbazwana SAPS.

While they are hopeful this is not the case, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the disappearance could be foul play.

All local law enforcement is involved in the search.

This is a developing story and more information will be provided when it becomes available.
