Second Nelson Mandela University student dies after Victoria Bay drowning incident

A young woman who was hospitalised after a fellow student drowned in the Western Cape has now also died.

A Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student from the George campus who had been hospitalised following a drowning incident at Victoria Bay on Friday has died.

Her fellow student drowned at the scene.

George Herald reports that according to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, emergency services were called to Victoria Bay on Friday afternoon after two women disappeared underwater.

Both were retrieved, but paramedics declared one, a 21-year-old woman, dead at the scene. The second woman, believed to be 19 years old, was taken to hospital in a critical condition and sadly passed away yesterday.

NMU confirmed the death on the same day and expressed its condolences to the student’s family, friends and fellow students. The university said that counselling and psychological support have been made available to affected students and staff.

“The university continues to work with the relevant authorities as more information becomes available,” an NMU spokesperson said.
