Security guard killed in Durban: Man expected in court soon

Police investigations continue following the death of a private law enforcement officer who was shot and killed last night.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda has confirmed that a man is expected to appear in court soon after he was arrested last night.

Netshiunda says the man allegedly shot and killed a security guard at a well-known holiday resort in Durban after an altercation.

He adds the security guard worked for a private security company, and was shot on Eskien Terrace Road in Point.

Netshiunda explains that information at police’s disposal suggest that a group of people – who were visitors at one of the flats – were involved in an argument with a man who was carrying a firearm.

“A security officer reportedly tried to intervene, however, he was shot and succumbed to his injuries in hospital,” he says.

Kyle van Reenen, the spokesperson for Emer-G-Med, says the incident happened around 22:00 at the residential high-rise building in the Point area.

“A tussle broke out between a security officer and a guest resulting in the security officer being shot. His colleagues rushed him to Addington Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival,” explains Van Reenen.

Netshiunda adds a firearm with 12 rounds of ammunition was confiscated.
