Self-styled Limpopo prophet remains in custody following murder
A man accused of murdering two women and tying up a five-year-old will appear in court again next week.

A 35-year-old man from Jane Furse in Limpopo remains in custody after appearing in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on counts of murder and rape.
It is alleged the crimes were committed in Silver Oaks village at about midnight on December 30.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found a 37-year-old woman with stab wounds to her neck.
“According to the information available, the victim, before she passed away, told her sister that she and her daughter were stabbed by the suspect, who is also alleged to be a prophet,” says SAPS provincial spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.
He adds that the 20-year-old daughter of the deceased was found in the lounge half naked, with a stab wound to the neck and showing signs of being raped. She was also certified dead.
“Upon searching the house, the five-year-old younger brother was found tied with tape in his room,” says Mashaba.
A preliminary investigation was conducted, resulting in the suspect being traced to his girlfriend’s residence in The Oaks.
“He was not found at the time but was tracked to a hitchhiking spot along the road. He was arrested and detained at the Hoedspruit Police Station,” says Mashaba.
The motive behind the killing is unknown. However, it is alleged that the 37-year-old woman used to consult the accused as he was practising as a prophet, says Mashaba.
The provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the swift apprehension of the man.
“We commend the police for reacting promptly to arrest the suspect masquerading as a prophet. Men tormenting and killing women must be isolated and subjected to the criminal justice system.
“This will send a strong warning that anyone who torments women and children, irrespective of their social standing in society, will be dealt with accordingly,” says Hadebe.
The man is expected to again appear in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on January 15.
The police investigation is ongoing.
