Senior Southern Cape municipal officials arrested over security contract kickbacks

Three municipal employees including a mayor are expected to appear in a Western Cape court over allegations of corruption.

The SAPS Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested a mayor, municipal manager and chief financial officer of a municipality on the Southern Cape coast of the Western Cape in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption involving a security services contract, reports Knysna-Plett Herald.

According to police, the arrests follow information received regarding allegations that a businessman who had been awarded the security contract was allegedly solicited for kickbacks in exchange for the continuation of the contract.

It is further alleged that the businessman had already paid hundreds of thousands of rand out of fear that his contract would be terminated.

The three suspects face charges of corruption and are expected to appear in court on Monday (October 5).
