Serious crimes increase in Durban
The City of Durban has been labelled as one of the most dangerous places to live in the country after its police stations were ranked with the most reported serious crimes.
This was revealed by Police Minister General Bheki Cele when releasing the national crime statistics today, 20 August, compiled from April 1 to the end of June 2021. The report revealed that police stations, which include Berea, Umbilo, Durban Central and Point, had shown an increase in serious crimes reported.
Cele said the trio crimes also increased compared to the distorted reporting period of 2020/2021.
“Aggravated robberies such as carjacking increased by 92.2% compared to the previous corresponding period. This figure would have increased by 13.1% if compared to the same period in 2019/2020,” he said.
For Berea, crucial sections of crime have decreased including murder, rape, carjacking, assault with intent for grievous bodily harm, illegal possession of firearms, and ammunition and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The statistics reveal crime trends during the period from April to June. Property-related crimes have increased by 244.4 % followed by some subcategories of aggravated robbery.
Meanwhile, contact crimes in Berea are up by 158.2 % with robbery being the most common crime.
Carjacking decreased by 0 counts while robberies at residential and non-residential premises decreased by 1% and zero counts respectively.
For Umbilo crimes, murder, attempted murder, rape, carjacking, sexual offences, and robbery at residential premises have increased.
Sexual offences cases have increased by 300, 0%, while rape cases increased by 450.0%. Carjacking increased from 2 to 9 cases by 350.0%.
For Durban Central contact crimes cases increased from 2 to 11 cases with the total of 450.0%. The rape cases revealed a decrease of 130 %. It decreased from 23 reported cases to 13.
Cases of carjacking increased by 130.0% to 9 reported cases. Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from 9 to 3 cases to 50%. For Point cases, murder increased by 600%.
The rape cases revealed a decrease of 200.0% from 9 to 6 cases. Carjacking increased by 600.0% from 1 to 7 cases.
