Social grant payments could cripple SA economy
Dr Nzimande believes social grants encourage young women to have more children rather than taking responsibility to secure their futures.
An increase in young social grant receivers could cripple the country’s economy if they are not ‘educated’.
This is according to Esayidi TVET rector Dr Sipho Nzimande who said that more young women were receiving social grants than those with jobs, resulting in a deepening social crisis, reports the South Coast Herald.
Dr Nzimande was speaking at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayoral community awards held at Desroches Hotel recently, where he spoke out strongly about how young women needed to be guided into turning their lives around instead of being given social grants.

Dr Nzimande believes social grants encourage young women to have more children rather than taking responsibility to secure their futures.

He added that young women needed to be empowered instead of being given ‘hand-outs’ like social grants.
“Social grants are like giving a person fish to eat for a day instead of teaching them how to fish so they can feed their families and earn a living while at it.
In future, the government might struggle to keep up with social grant demands if grant receivers continue to surpass the number of people who are employed.”
Dr Nzimande also commended those who received awards on the day and said it’s ordinary people like them who put their lives at risk to ensure others had better lives in the communities.
