South Coast peaceful amid threats of national shutdown protests
A team of dedicated volunteers, together with security and law enforcement, will carry out operations, put in place yesterday, until Wednesday, August 25.
It all seems quiet on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast as threats of national shutdown protests for today (Monday, August 23) circulate.
All roads are reportedly clear at this stage, from Hibberdene to Port Edward.
The rest of the province is on high alert with reports of a few isolated protests in some areas.
Husain Motala of Sheppie Community Police Forum (CPF) operations and security released a statement saying operations will be conducted by CPF and police members.
“The South African National Defence Force will also be deployed in certain strategic locations,” he said.
Operations include roadblocks at key routes, checkpoints, monitoring of strategic infrastructure, foot patrols within CBD and residential areas, and vehicle patrols.
The risk assessment indicates that the threats are mainly for Northern KZN, but Motala said they will make a concerted effort to ensure that they maintain a high level of visibility to prevent any form of crime, threats or any disruption.
They appealed to one and all to remain calm and not to panic.
Motala said a team of dedicated volunteers, together with security and law enforcement, will be ensuring that local areas are kept safe.
Avoid sharing any unverified information especially on social media that will cause panic and chaos.
“Previously we experienced many false alarms and fake messages, etc. Rather contact a local security company or CPF members for verification.”
Operations were put in place last night and will continue until Wednesday, August 25.
All businesses and services will operate as normal.
“Report any suspicious activity and should you require any clarity, contact your local CPF members.”
