Soweto e-hailing attack leaves 1 dead

A fatal shooting and two injuries at Maponya Mall are believed to be the result of taxi violence targeting e-hailing vehicles.

One person has been fatally shot and two others were injured after a violent attack on e-hailing vehicles at Maponya Mall in Klipspruit, Soweto, yesterday.

Soweto Urban reports that according to preliminary reports, an e-hailing vehicle stopped at the mall’s entrance when about four armed men approached the driver, opened fire, and set the vehicle alight. A second nearby vehicle was also targeted. The driver managed to flee the scene, but their car was also torched.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that both the driver and a passer-by sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A case of murder, attempted murder, and arson has been opened for further investigation.

The incident is suspected to be related to taxi violence. The SAPS and JMPD are monitoring the situation.
