SPCA issues warning after dogs allegedly poisoned in Kempton Park
Residents are being urged to check their yards for suspicious food or substances after several dogs were allegedly poisoned in Gauteng.
The Kempton Park SPCA has warned pet owners to be extra vigilant after a horrific incident in which several dogs were allegedly poisoned in Bonaero Park, reports Kempton Express.
The warning comes after a resident woke up to find their beloved pets dead in their yard, in what is believed to be an intentional poisoning.
Kempton Park SPCA Senior Inspector Duàn Coetzee said intentional poisoning of animals is one of the most cruel acts and urged owners to take extra precautions.
“It is absolutely devastating for a family to lose their animals in this manner. Poisoning is an extremely cruel and inhumane way for an animal to die,” said Coetzee.
“We urge all pet owners in Bonaero Park and surrounding areas to be vigilant. Please check your yards daily for any suspicious food, meat or substances that may have been thrown over your wall, and ensure your properties are as secure as possible,” Coetzee said.
Coetzee urged residents who find any suspicious substances not to touch them with bare hands, to keep animals away from them, and to seek immediate veterinary assistance if they suspect their animal has been poisoned.
“If your property has been targeted, we advise against simply getting another dog for security. If the poisoning was intentional, the next dog could also become a victim. Rather invest in security measures such as cameras and adequate lighting,” Coetzee said.
The SPCA also reminded residents that animal cruelty is a criminal offence in terms of the Animals Protection Act.
Residents who have information or who find suspicious substances are encouraged to report it to the Kempton Park SPCA on 011 975 6537 or email info@kemptonspca.co.za.
