Spring snow covers SA in icy blanket

Even though spring has sprung and summer is on the way, the mercury has plummeted and snow has fallen in various parts of the country.

Just when you thought it was time to pack away your winter woollies, an icy cold front hit various areas across the country, including KZN, the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and parts of the Eastern Cape.

Today’s maximum temperatures in both Dullstroom and Ermelo in Mpumalanga are under 5°.

South Coast Herald reported today that the South African Weather Service warned there would be cloudy and cold conditions over the central and eastern parts of KZN, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

It was reported by Arrive Alive that icy conditions, light snow, rain and freezing temperatures are affecting parts of the N3 Toll Route, with treacherous conditions between Van Reenen’s Pass and Warden.

According to an article published in Northern Natal News, snow is falling steadily in the Van Reenen area.

While traffic was still able to pass through at the time of publishing, the roads were wet and slick, and motorists were advised to be cautious in the potentially dangerous conditions.

The weather could get worse as the day progresses, so be extra vigilant if you are travelling on this route today.

Northern Natal News also reported today that days after experiencing boiling weather, farmers in the Sunset Rest/Fort Mistake area woke up to snow this morning.

“The snow started melting at about midday. But the air is freezing,” said farmer Fritz Botes.

Snow also fell on Indumeni mountain which overlooks the Dundee district of KZN, while sleet was reported in Glencoe and surrounds.

Yellow level 2 weather warnings for today

* Damaging winds between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

* Severe thunderstorm expected over Northern Cape and North West province.

* Disruptive snowfall in the extreme western KZN and extreme Eastern Free State.

Conditions will cause roads to become slippery and dangerous.

Drivers are requested to:

  • Adjust their driving behaviour to the prevailing road and weather conditions.
  • Reduce their travelling speed, increase following distances, and keep their vehicle’s headlights switched on, especially when visibility is poor or roads are wet.
  • Avoid overtaking unless necessary, and only proceed when it is safe to do so.
  • Take care to only stop at designated parking areas.

Road users are warned to be prepared for possible traffic congestion and delays.

“Keep sufficient emergency supplies in your vehicle, including warm clothes and blankets, water, food, medication, a cellphone, its charger and a torch,” says the N3 Toll Concession’s operations manager Thania Dhoogra.

Temperatures are expected to rise from on Wednesday.
