Springs mine investigating officer shot dead

A 55-year-old employee of Gold One Mine in Modder East was shot and killed while driving with his wife and two sons.

Gold One Mine’s investigating officer succumbed to head injuries after he was shot near the mine in Modder East, Springs, last night.

The shooting occurred in Outeniqua Road while the 55-year-old man was driving from his house – with his wife and their two sons – in a silver Mercedes-Benz.

According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, it is alleged as they approached speed humps, the wife heard shots being fired at their vehicle.

“A few minutes later, she noticed that her husband was bleeding from his mouth. He was able to stop the vehicle at a house nearby, and he ran into the yard,” explains Nevhuhulwi.

Nevhuhulwi adds the deceased’s wife followed him into the yard, where she found him on the ground – unconscious and bleeding.

He was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.

Nevhuhulwi says it is alleged the shooters also shot at bystanders that were sitting outside a nearby house.

One person sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

“The shooters were driving a black BMW with no registration,” adds Nevhuhulwi.

The police are investigating a case of murder, and no arrests have been made yet.
