Staff at Addington Hospital have downed tools yesterday due to poor working conditions, Berea Mail reports.
The South Beach hospital is currently closed as nurses and staff wait outside to be addressed by management.
Concerns from the healthcare workers range from poor working conditions, bad management and an unsafe working environment.
The embattled 140-year-old hospital has a long documented history of faulty lifts that force patients and workers to climb long stairs.
The Democratic Alliance party recently wrote to the South African Human Rights Commission to investigate the matter of lifts at the hospital as it was now untenable.
“We regard it as untenable that both staff and patients at Addington should have to operate under circumstances where there are no lift facilities whatsoever. Then there is the issue of safety. In the latest incident, a week ago, staff and patients were stuck in the hospital’s only functional lift at the time, for several hours. Fortunately, they were rescued before the lift allegedly dropped to the ground floor,” said Dr Rishigen Viranna, DA MPL.
“Addington’s lifts have been a longstanding issue for many years, primarily due to years of failed maintenance and a lack of oversight by KZN’s Department of Health.”
