Stop and search at Tongaat Toll sees cop shot and criminals escape
The occupants of a car without plates and found to be containing police uniforms opened fire on police.
Police on Saturday evening were shot at while doing a stop and search operation at Tongaat Toll, North Coast Courier reports.
Officers had flagged down a car and approached the driver, asking him to open his car boot.
Police pulled over the car because it had no registration plates.
Four men remained in the car.
“On searching the boot, an officer found a Kalesun handset and a bag of police uniforms.
“On questioning the driver if he or occupants of the vehicle were police officers, he confirmed they were not,” said provincial Saps spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.
The officer called over a colleague when the men alighted from the car, opening fire on police.
The men fled into a nearby sugarcane field, while the driver returned to the car and fled southbound on the N2.
“The members gave chase but lost sight of the vehicle and returned to the crime scene,” said Colonel Mbele.
An officer was grazed in the buttocks during the exchange of gunfire.
Police gave up the search and Colonel Mbele said identifying the criminals would not be possible.
The officer was seen to by paramedics.
