Student (20) murdered at University of Venda, suspect in custody

Police have arrested a man after his girlfriend was found dead in a room on a university campus.

A 20-year-old man is due to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Monday, in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old female University of Venda student.

Polokwane Review reports that Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says that Thohoyandou visible policing officers responded to a complaint at the university’s student residence yesterday.

When they arrived, security personnel directed them to a room where they discovered a woman’s body lying in a pool of blood, with multiple stab wounds to her upper body, says Ledwaba.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim, who were reportedly in a relationship, had been involved in a heated altercation inside the suspect’s room before neighbours heard screams,” he adds.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but the victim died.

Ledwaba says the suspect attempted to escape by jumping from the third-floor window, sustaining injuries in the process.

He is receiving medical treatment under police guard ahead of his court appearance
