Suspect in murder case of mom burnt outside Benoni pre-school dies

On November 17, he appeared in absentia at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed to December 15.

The 40-year-old man charged with the murder of his girlfriend Kgomotso Sekhwela died at a local hospital on November 22.

He has been at the Tambo Memorial Hospital under police guard for almost two months.

The suspect was being treated for burn wounds sustained when he set Sekhwela’s car alight outside a pre-school her child attends in Miles Sharp Street at around 06:15 on September 13.

The deceased was also charged with malicious damage to property and reckless driving.

On November 17, he appeared in absentia at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed to December 15.

Sekhwela had just dropped off her child at the pre-school when the deceased approached her car and smashed the driver’s window. Sekhwela, who sustained serious burn wounds, died on September 23.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage.
