Suspect’s arrest may lead to more

A 32-year-old man has been arrested for house robbery, murder, and rape in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga.

Police said they had been investigating only a case of house robbery at KaMhlushwa yesterday, but the investigations had led to the discovery of the other two offences, Mpumalanga News reported.

Upon questioning the suspect, Caswell Ngomane, police discovered he was linked to the rape and murder cases reported from Masibekela Trust.

In the case, it was alleged the deceased was shot in front of his girlfriend, who was then raped by the suspect.

Tonga police spokesperson Lieutenant Mzwandile Nyambi said the suspect led police to where the other items were, which he had sold to a 60-year-old man from Mbuzini, and they included a plasma TV and laptops.

The suspect reportedly told the police the firearm that he had used was with his girlfriend at Block C Trust.

The girlfriend was also arrested for possession of the firearm, a pistol Z88 with seven rounds, which Ngomane had used to commit house robbery, added Nyambi.

Ngomane has been remanded in custody.

“We believe more arrests will be made, as he has mentioned other people he has worked with in committing the hideous crimes,” said Nyambi.

Police have issued a stern warning against buying stolen goods.

In a separate incident, a joint operation held by the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police and Msinga Police Crime Prevention team in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal, led to an arrest of four suspects and recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition last month.

The members had raided few homesteads in the area after they had received information about illegal firearms, police said.

Police added seven unlicensed firearms and 16 live rounds had been recovered from various homesteads.

Four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
